Supercoach Makes Early Strike
64^ GP Col San Martino - Trofeo PIVA (TV) Italy - UCI 1.2 U23 April 1, 2012 JAY McCARTHY has continued the tradition of recent years for Team JAYCO A.I.S. with a great team win at Trofeo Piva (Veneto, Italy). Following on from Richard Lang's win in 2011, and Michael Matthews 2nd place in 2010, Jay finished off a totally committed team effort to secure a first-up win in the Team's first European race for 2012. A slight change in direction on the circuit, saw a more difficult climb covered 8 times over an 18km circuit, with a finishing lap of 27km and 3 climbs. Damien Howson and Calvin Watson covered moves early, and made a lead group of 13 that stayed away for over 100km, with the race coming back together inside the last hour. Damien kept the Mountain points in check, always near the front over the climbs, and securing the Mountains classification in a gutsy effort to keep the lead group motivated to work. Calvin was also on a great individual ride together with Damien in the break, and after the race came back together, was still able to play the trump card to get Jay onto the back of the winning move leading into the last climb. Jay was always in control covering all the crucial moves on the final circuit, and then powered home comfortably in the sprint from a final lead group of 10. Calvin was still able to secure 12th place, only 8 seconds from Jay's group, with the main group at 35secs. Michael Freiburg, Aaron Donnelly and Nick Aitken supported the team extremely well and were all still there at the business end of the race to ensure Jay was well protected going into the crucial last lap. Always great to start the European campaign with such a fantastic team effort. The U23 Nations Cup starts next week with Tour de Flandres (April 7th), Tour de Picarde (11th) and ZLM Tour (14th) with Australia also having a team in Liege Bastogne Liege Espoir on the 14th as well. 64^ GP Col San Martino - Trofeo PIVA (TV) Italy - UCI 1.2 U23 Result ( 186 starters, 47 finishers ) 1. Why 29ers?
There’s no doubt that the popularity of 29ers is continuing to grow, and riders of every level are starting to catch on to the general benefits of big wheels. Float Over Obstacles 29” wheels “float” over bumps, rocks, sand, etc., which gives the rider more control. Roll Over Bumps Thanks to a 6.1% lower angle over a 130mm bump, 29” wheels don’t get hung up on ledges or shelves. Boost Control A longer section of tire touches the ground. This expanded “contact patch” translates directly to increased control. Go Faster Once rolling, a 29” wheel maintains momentum much better than the standard 26”. check out the full Specialized range of 29ers (PDF)
