| TYRES |
Most mountain bikes come with
an all-purpose tyre, which is flatter in the middle and knobbly on
the sides. The idea is that if you are riding straight on a flattish
surface, you will have good surface contact with a reduced rolling
resistance and if you are on a rougher surface or cornering a lot,
the tyres will dig into the surface for good traction. If most of
your riding is commuting on paths or roads, you will certainly benefit
from the use of "slicks" with little or no tread, whether
you are on a mountain bike or a hybrid. We are usually able to swap
the fitted tyres for slicks on a new bike.
Road bike tyres come in either "open" or "tubular"
styles. Open, requiring a tube, is by far the most popular style and
all bikes come stocked with rims to suit this type of tyre. Look for
a tyre with kevlar for increased puncture resistance. If you are racing
on the road and definitely if you are racing on the track (velodrome),
you may take advantage of the lightweight tubular style (also known
as "singles"). These have to be glued on to the specially
shaped rim and usually are thrown out if punctured, as patching is
a tedious task.
Another tip for puncture resistance is the
use of thorn proof tubes, these are thicker on the road surface and
are a must for any long distance touring.
In stock are many different specialist tyres including downhill, cross-country,
road racing and BMX racing and flatland. |
